The Program
The Family and Youth Program is a one day a week adventure in learning about nature and the arts of survival. You’ll experience the wonder of making fire without matches, creating a shelter that’s warm and safe, understanding the language of nature and moving silently through the woods! Students connect to the earth in a new and profound way with hands-on, experiential learning techniques passed down for generations. Hwiemtun (Fred Roland) will provide an cultural dimension to the program with stories, music, songs and ceremony from his native Cowichan tribes and worldwide Indigenous communties that he has studied and lived with. This transformative experience is something treasured by the whole family!
This program is designed for families to attend together or for youth, age 8-11, to attend without an adult. Children are divided into age group learning teams and some activities are done with the entire group. In addition to having their own adventures, adults engage in a workshop in the basics of “Coyote Teaching” - the methods behind what is being taught.
Students 5 - 7 will be part of the “Wolf Pup’s” group. At this age, special care and appropriate teaching style are important. Parents will be on “call” if their child needs attention. Students under 5 will enjoy the adventure with their parents.
